Hello September!

September is here! And, it could not arrive soon enough... I love this month. Why? It's the whole notion of starting fresh as it is usually back-to-school time.  As someone who was not particularly fond of going to school; once I arrived and settled into my seat, everything was good.  Grade school was mostly a good experiences, but there were some types who made some days, well... stink!

That occasional  unpleasantness was certainly made up for by wonderful friends, teachers and after school activities.  I even liked attending Summer school sessions.  My favorite subject was reading and it was the only subject in which I made good grades.

So, in celebration of back-to-school time, a love of reading, and September being Roald Dahl-apalooza, I'd like to dedicate this month's blog posts to one of my favorite book authors.  Notice I did not specify 'children's' book author.  Why?  Because I didn't discover Dahl's books until I became a mom.  I recall those evenings when one of my children and I would be rolling on the floor with laughter... literally.  The Charlie books were hysterical, James and the Giant Peach, a treasure. But the two books that really captured a sense of whimsy and adventure - sprinkled with mischief and danger -  were Roald Dahl's autobiographical stories collected in BOY and GOING SOLO... I recommend them to everyone; young and old.

Happy Birthday, Roald Dahl, and Happy 50th Anniversary Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  It's a month long celebration... join me, won't you.

In addition to re-reading and sharing some of Dahl's books here, I will also be reviewing movies adapted from books, like Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, of course,  Charlie and the Chocolate Factor and  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Now, back to MNEMONICS.  According to my source, Oxford Dictionaries, it's meaning could not be more simply defined, "The study and development of systems for improving and assisting the memory."

So, let's start with the basics...days of the week.  Two people I know thought for sure today was Saturday. Alas, it is not. Sadly, for one of those individuals, they still have to be up early tomorrow morning for work... bummer, son. My mom has a standard monthly calendar posted in her kitchen in plain sight. How neither of these "kids" knew what today was boggles the mind. My son's calendar is posted as one exits the front door, for goodness sake. I don't use a desk or wall calendar, my phone has one, so I pretty much rely on that to keep me posted.  Currently, I'm kept on track because I administer my mom's daily medication. She has this giant segmented pill sorter that I fill up with a week's supply of meds. I have to go over tomorrow, to drop off her Sunday through Saturday supply.

Now, how easy is it these days to help keep track of the days of the week when there is no paper calendar at hand? Super easy.  We have calendars on our phones, date on t.v. guides, almost every site you visit on the internet has the current date (I think), not to mention the bottom right corner of the computer (on mine anyway), and for some of us, even on our watches (if the battery hasn't gone dead, like mine has). Easy, right?

I'm glad I had NaBloPoMo for July 2014 to help me keep track of the days last month. Participating in NaBloPoMo for August may have me bringing out my much unused daily-planner, and that's a good thing.

Did I Mention...

I started a hobby.

It was fun. So fun I stopped.

What can I say, life.

You know the drill... taxiing a husband and a son to and from work, school carpool, elderly parent watch , husband health watch, car problems, elderly diabetic parent meal management, husband ER visit, elderly parent emergency surgery, bailing on carpooling because that one nightmare kid, more car problems, more driving, more Mom (elderly parent) stuff. The list goes on and on. Oh, and let's not forget coordinating college kid's travel plans for visits home, including that extra stressful task of making arrangements for everything that needs to be taken care of (from opposite ends of the country) before she left school for Summer break.

Anyway, I hope to return to creating new vlogs... that hobby I was telling you about.
